The Food Bank Takes A Fresh Approach to Hunger, Opens On-Site Food Processing Facility

June 26th, 2018Events, Media Releases

The on-site food processing room will increase the amount of fresh food available to those in need in Waterloo Region.

Kitchener, ON – June 25, 2018 – The Food Bank of Waterloo Region unveiled a new on-site food processing facility this week that will increase the variety, quality and quantity of fresh food available to those in our community in need of food assistance.

The Fresh Approaches Food Centre is an on-site food processing facility that will allow volunteers and staff to safely process and repackage fresh food donations, extending their life span and freshness.

“We have been distributing fresh and frozen foods to those in need for a number of years, however, the opening of The Fresh Approaches Food Centre, allows us to evolve and grow our capacity to better serve the needs of our community,” said Wendi Campbell, CEO, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. “Being able to accept more fresh food donations and implementing improved food processing practices, helps us distribute a higher quality of food to our agencies and partners.”

One in 20 households in Waterloo Region are in need of food assistance. And each week, The Food Bank distributes more than 35,000 meals throughout our community.

The Fresh Approaches Food Centre is a 578 square foot facility that will help us meet the needs of our community by providing fresher, healthier food options to those struggling with hunger.

In 2017, 35% of the food distributed by The Food Bank was fresh and that number is expected to grow significantly with the launch of The Fresh Approaches Food Centre.

Current equipment, demolition and construction costs bring the total for the Fresh Approaches Food Centre to $115,355 with an additional $30,000 minimum in known equipment.

There are a number of items that still need to be purchased: vacuum sealer; stainless steel tables; food choppers; coffee grinder; digital scale, knives, slotted spoons, and aluminum stock pots.
