Help Fill a Plate this Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends and feasting. But, for too many of our neighbours in Waterloo Region, Thanksgiving is another day with not enough food to eat.
Hunger can affect any one of us at any time. That’s why it’s so important to channel our community’s energy to help each other in times of need.
We recently received a phone call from a woman in her 40s. To protect her privacy, I’ll call her Jill. Previously a donor to local food programs, Jill never expected to need a food bank herself. But Jill’s family was faced with a number of unexpected setbacks all at once.
First, she had to drop down to part-time hours at work due to an injury. Then, without notice, her husband lost the job where he worked for the past decade.
The couple had very little savings to fall back on. With their money running out and cupboards empty, Jill reached out to us for help.
Imagine it – one day everything is fine and the next, the life you’ve built comes crumbling down around you.
Thanks to our generous donors – kind community members just like you – we were able to reassure Jill that everything was going to be okay.
We connected Jill to a local agency partner who provided her with a food hamper the same day. We also gave her more information on where she could receive food assistance close to home in the days to come.
You should have heard her sigh of relief!
Jill was so grateful to have a backup plan in place for a few weeks. She felt safe in the knowledge that at least her family wouldn’t go hungry as they figured out how to get back on their feet.
Each and every day, dozens of people like Jill call us looking for food assistance. Hundreds more access the many food programs offered by our network of 100+ local agencies and programs, made possible thanks to caring community members.
Your support can fill an empty plate!
$1 can fill 3 empty plates with food – and hope – this Thanksgiving.
How can $1 do so much? We are able to purchase food – and stretch each dollar beyond what could normally be achieved at the grocery store – thanks to our strong local partnerships and generous community.
With you by our side, we can feed even more women, men and children struggling with poverty and food insecurity.
Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and hungry neighbours need your help. Please give today to fill a plate with food and hope this Thanksgiving.
