20+ Years of the Onkel Hans Food Drive
This year Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest celebrates their 50th anniversary. For many, the Oktoberfest experience means being surrounded by friends at a favorite festhalle, strong family traditions, and celebrating the German heritage and spirit in our community.
But Oktoberfest goes beyond just good times and good cheer. It is an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate its roots, deep traditions and support community-based organizations and programs, such as The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region and Oktoberfest have worked closely for many years, positively contributing and making a difference in the community. And over the years, the impact has been incredible.
A strong partnership of team work and collaboration began in 1995, with the first ever Onkel Hans Food Drive. More than 20 years later, the annual food drive is a significant contributor to The Food Bank and has provided more than 1 million meals, to date, to those in our community in need of food assistance.
Every year, thousands of people line the Thanksgiving Day parade route and generously help those less fortunate in our community.
Hunger is real in Waterloo Region. The reality is, not everyone is able to put essential and nutritious food on the table. In Waterloo Region, 1 in 20 households are in need of food assistance and 220 food hampers are handed out each day.
It is easy to make a difference. You can share the spirit of Thanksgiving and Gemutlichkeit by supporting one of the many events taking place during the 10 day festival. A full listing of Onkel Hans Food Drive events can be found on our website.
Have a safe and happy festival-season!
