Building a Future Without Hunger; One Can at a Time

March 7th, 2019Media Releases

Kitchener, ON – March 7, 2019 – Canstruction® Waterloo Region kicks-off this weekend with some exciting new changes, including Find Phil (scavenger hunt) and even the chance to Try-A-Build. The annual event, which runs from March 9-17, 2019 at Conestoga Mall, offers something for everyone to enjoy.

In its 12th year, Canstruction® Waterloo Region raises funds, food and awareness about hunger and food insecurity in our community.

“Last year, more than 34,000 individuals accessed food assistance programs in Waterloo Region,” explained Wendi Campbell, CEO The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. “The reality is hunger can happen to anyone at any time. Events like Canstruction® help us raise much needed food and funds but also have important conversations about the need for food assistance in Waterloo Region.”

New this year, we are excited to announce two additions to Canstruction® Waterloo Region: Try-A-Build, sponsored by The Red Carpet Crew: Julie D. Martin Heritage House and Find Phil, sponsored by Eyes on King, and Eyeview Optical.

Try-A-Build offers corporate teams, community groups and individuals the chance to experience Canstruction® Waterloo Region on a smaller, more manageable scale.

March 11-15, 2019, corporate teams and community groups are invited to sign up for a team building activity that makes a difference. Each day, two teams will compete to see who is voted the daily Try-A-Build champion! 400 cans and 2 hours, what will you build?

March 9-10 and March 15-16, the general public is invited to Try-A-Build. Stop by Winners Court in Conestoga Mall to sign up for a time slot and get creative. A minimum donation to The Food Bank is appreciated.

Find Phil

Sponsored by Eyes on King and Eyeview Optical

We’ve hidden mini-versions of our mascot, Phil the Food Drive Bag, in a few structures! Look closely at each structure to see if you can find Phil in three structures for your chance to win some great prizes.

And don’t forget, you can still Donate to Vote for your favorite structure. Voting is easy and can be done in person at Conestoga Mall. Donations can also be made online at: One dollar equals one vote and that provides 3 meals in our community.

All funds and food items raised during Canstruction® Waterloo Region help us provide food for 220 emergency hampers and more than 1,600 community meals, through the Community Food Assistance Network – a system of 100+ community programs and agency partners – needed every day in our community.

Award winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 12, with the People’s Choice announcement following Monday, March 18, 2019 on The Food Bank of Waterloo Region website and social media accounts.

“Canstruction® is a fantastic opportunity for community groups, corporate teams and schools to put their creativity on display and help build a future without hunger,” said Becky Riley, Community Events Coordinator for The Food Bank.
