April 30th, 2020In the Community
Heartland Farm Mutual Inc., has a long-history in Waterloo and was built on a foundation of strong community values and the goal to provide protection and exemplary service for their clients. Today, more than 146 years since operations began, their commitment and passion for helping those in need continues.
Heartland Farm Mutual Inc., was formed in 2016, following the merger of North Waterloo Farmers Mutual and Oxford Mutual. This merger brought together a combined 250 years’ experience and expertise in the insurance industry, specifically serving rural Ontario.
In this business profile, we chat with Louis Durocher, President and Chief Executive Officer at Heartland Farm Mutual Inc., to learn about the importance of community support and how they’re giving back during COVID-19 pandemic.
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region (The Food Bank): Tell us about your organization?
Heartland Farm Mutual Inc.: We are the preferred agri-business and rural insurance specialist in Waterloo Region, understanding and anticipating our customers’ needs beyond their expectations. Our roots are in farm insurance but we also write general, personal, auto, and commercial insurance. We have a long history in Ontario with offices and staff located in Waterloo and Thamesford.
The Food Bank: Why is it important to Heartland Farm Mutual Inc., to give back to the community?
Heartland Farm Mutual Inc.: We run a program called “iHeart”, which is an organizational initiative that allows us to support community-based programs at the request of our employees, agents and brokers. This year, giving the obvious health crisis, we wanted to go beyond that program and do more. Supporting The Food Bank was an obvious way to help and have a direct and immediate impact. Given the unemployment and food hardships that society faces in general, this was an opportunity for us to be grateful and share with the community.
The Food Bank: What does it mean to your organization to be able to give back so generously to the charitable and non-profit organizations in Waterloo Region?
Heartland Farm Mutual Inc.: At the best of times, it can be challenging and difficult to help those in need of food assistance and we recognize that those challenges are only going to be amplified during the current health crisis. Knowing The Food Bank would experience challenges (less volunteers, dwindling donations, food delivery/distribution shifts) and that there would be an increase in demand, due to job loss and reduction, we wanted to provide a helping hand.
The Food Bank: How does your organization/business/group support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region?
Heartland Farm Mutual Inc,: We hosted a silent auction fundraising event in December with all proceeds going to The Food Bank and we recently made a $50,000 donation that will help provide an additional 150,000 meals to people in Waterloo Region and throughout Ontario, struggling to put food on the table.
The Food Bank: Why does your organization support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region?
Heartland Farm Mutual Inc,: We saw an opportunity to alleviate the added challenges as best we could. This donation to The Food Bank is about celebrating all the compassion coming out at a time that has created unprecedented challenges for the world, society and our community. It’s important in times like this to raise the collective disposition of communities across Ontario and Canada.
