So it’s no surprise that one of the key priorities for long-time business, Zehrs Market Supermarket – is to give back to the community in which they operate. Founded in Kitchener 70 years ago, they have a long history of giving back to many organizations, such as The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
A partnership that spans more than 10 years, Zehrs Market Supermarket has provided an incredible 1,800,994 meals and counting!
In this business profile, we chat with John Lockhart, Senior Director of Operations for D1 at Zehrs Market Supermarket about the partnership with The Food Bank and the importance of supporting the community both during and beyond a pandemic.
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region (The Food Bank): Tell me a little bit about your organization?
Zehrs Market Supermarkets: Founded in Kitchener in the 1950’s, Zehrs Market Supermarket has been serving food lovers in Waterloo Region for 70 years. With 42 locations throughout Southern Ontario, our mission is to bring more to the table by delivering a food experience that goes beyond a shopping list. We strive to deliver exceptional service and food quality to our shoppers y sticking to the commitments that are most important to us.
The Food Bank: Why is it important as an organization to give back to the community?
Zehrs Market Supermarkets: Giving back to the communities in which we operate is a key priority of our business. Our stores give back in many ways year-round, including donations to local food banks, food recovery agencies and shelters, as well as sponsoring local events, organizations and sports organizations and schools through fundraising in support of President’s Choice Children’s Charity and their school nutrition grants. We are proud to have built such strong relationships within our communities over the years and it has never been more important for us to support our local communities.
The Food Bank: What does it mean to your organization to be able to give back so generously to the charitable and non-profit organizations in Waterloo Region?
Zehrs Market Supermarkets: It’s paramount for us to give back to the local community. Not only do our store team raise funds and awareness but our warehouse also donates to The Food Bank. It’s humbling. There are volunteers and organizations that are pushing for the greater good. It’s heartwarming for us, makes us feel good to know we are making a difference in our communities. We have a lot to be thankful for and it’s great to share that with those around us.
We work, live and operate in this community. We want to ensure our neighbours aren’t going without and everyone is taken care of. It makes us feel good to know we are making a difference in our community. We have a lot to be thankful and it’s great to share that with those around us.
The Food Bank: How does your organization support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region?
Zehrs Market Supermarkets: We support The Food Bank in a number of ways, through quarterly food drives, Sea of Orange Food Drive, the Stuff-A-Bus campaign, as well as a Food & Fund Drive sponsor. We are proud to have built strong partnerships in our community over the years.
The Food Bank: Why do you and/or your organization support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region?
Zehrs Market Supermarkets: We have a responsibility to give back to those that need it most. COVID-19 has impacted everyone differently and people in our communities are constantly facing different challenges. We are in a position to help and we feel it is the right thing to do. It’s about being a good neighbour and human being. As an organization we want to provide a good experience and want to ensure everyone in life is able to eat and has access to not just food but healthy food and the necessities.
