December 24th, 2021Awareness

The holiday season can be stressful and for many, a time they are simply looking to get through. However, this should be a chance to spend time with family and friends, enjoy the winter season and recharge. So how do you do you foster wellness this healthy holiday season? We have seven tips to get you started.

  1. Plan Ahead
    • Grocery stores are especially busy during the holiday season. Be sure to make a list before heading out with all the items you need for your holiday meals to minimize trips to the store and having to return for forgotten items.
  2. Enjoy Your Favourite Meals
    • The media often highlights the negative aspects of holiday meals, when really, one or two meals isn’t going to ruin any nutrition goals you have. Food is so much more than calories, it brings us together, holds memories and traditions, and often creates excitements over special meals or dishes that are only made once a year. This year, ditch the negative talk around food, and simply enjoy those special meals.
  3. Take Time for You
    • The hustle and bustle of the holiday season can often leave you feeling drained. Make sure you set aside time for yourself to relax and recharge. Some easy ideas include watching your favourite holiday movie with a hot drink or enjoying a relaxing hike in the snow.
  4. Spend Time in the Kitchen
    • Food brings us together and the holidays are no exception. This is a great time to spend time in the kitchen with others. Some fun ideas include sharing a traditional family favourite recipe with children, doing a holiday cookie exchange with friends, or even trying out a new recipe for a holiday get together.
  5. Start a New Tradition
    • Nothing is more exciting than a holiday tradition that only comes around once a year. This holiday season why not start a new tradition or continue one that you used to do as a child.
  6. Get Moving
    • Despite colder temperatures and snowy weather, you can still enjoy physical activity outdoors during the holiday season. Some easy ideas include going on a winter hike, ice skating, sledding or even shoveling snow. Don’t forget to make sure you are dressed appropriately for the cold weather to prevent frostbite and stay warm.
  7. Give Back to Others
    • In Waterloo Region, 13,957 household (1 in 20) struggle to afford food and other necessities. The holidays are no exception. This holiday season, consider taking time to give back to others. Make a financial donation, donate non-perishable food item, or give your time to help ensure the more than 34,600 people in our community won’t go hungry this holiday season.
