Waterloo Region’s community impact report highlights shocking increase in need for emergency food support

In this month’s op-ed, Kim Wilhelm, interim CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, discusses The Food Bank’s annual Community Impact report. It’s no secret the past few years have been difficult for many individuals and families, and the 2021–2022 report paints a grim picture of how many people can’t afford to put food on the table in Waterloo region. In 2021, one in 20 households across our region accessed an emergency food assistance program through our Community Food Assistance Network. In 2022, that number jumped to one in 14 households.
