Celebrating volunteers during National Volunteer Week
April 17th, 2023Volunteers, In the News
Waterloo Region, Ont., April 17, 2023 – It’s National Volunteer Week—a week to celebrate and thank volunteers for sharing their time, talent, and energy. This year’s theme is Volunteering Weaves us Together.
At the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, more than 2,600 volunteers generously donate their time each year to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry.
“Our volunteers are essential to our work at The Food Bank, and we couldn’t support the one in 14 households struggling to afford to put food on the table without their dedication, commitment, and hard work,” says Kim Wilhelm, interim CEO, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
In 2021–2022, volunteers at The Food Bank contributed more than 23,000 hours packing food hampers, assembling orders, sorting fresh, frozen, and non-perishable products, and delivering and distributing food to the more than 120 community programs and agency partners a part of the Community Food Assistance Network. Volunteers also help at community fundraising events.
Wilhelm adds, “The actions of our volunteers weave us together and make our community a better place to live.”
The Food Bank offers several rewarding volunteer opportunities such as brand ambassadors, drivers and assistants, and general warehouse volunteers. Corporate and community groups looking to give back to their community can participate in food engagement activities including non-perishable food sorting.
