Outrun Hunger: Racing to Make a Difference
February 24th, 2025In the Community
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the owners of Runners’ Choice Waterloo, an independent and locally owned specialty store serving the Kitchener-Waterloo area for over 25 years, went the extra mile to give back to our community.
“During COVID, the running community was struggling, as race organizers were unable to host events,” explains Alex Ullman, a co-owner of the store. “So, we wanted to organize a virtual race for the community. Fortunately, our sales remained steady throughout the pandemic, so we didn’t want to profit from the event. Instead, we made it a fundraiser to support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.”
That’s how Outrun Hunger first crossed the starting line—a two-week-long virtual run/walk of three, five, or 10 kilometres held at the end of November. Since then, it has hit the ground running, becoming an annual tradition. Participants pay a $10 registration fee, with all proceeds donated to The Food Bank. Throughout the event, they also collect food donations onsite at the store.
“The most rewarding aspect of organizing Outrun Hunger is witnessing how runners’ enthusiasm for their sport translates into meaningful change within the community,” Alex says. “By combining their love for running with a shared commitment to giving back, participants play a vital role in supporting The Food Bank’s efforts to eradicate hunger.”
In 2024, 226 participants sprinted into action, helping raise over 14,000 meals for people facing hunger in Waterloo region. To date, Outrun Hunger has provided more than 50,000 meals—and in 2025, they’re setting the pace to go even further.
Alex says, “As runners lace up and take to the streets, they embody the powerful notion that every step matters—not only for their own physical well-being but also for uplifting those in need.”
