The HungerCount 2015 report shows that 850,000 people across Canada access food banks each month. More than 300,000 of those helped are children. Here in Waterloo Region 1 in 20 households received food assistance last year. Half of these households are families with children.

“Fire to Food Bank 365 capitalizes on what Waterloo Fire Rescue is already doing, and makes it better,” said Richard Hepditch, Chief, Waterloo Fire & Rescue, at the Tuesday launch event. “This new program promotes food donations 365 days a year. This is a move toward sustainable food assistance in Waterloo Region.

The unique, collaborative Community Food Assistance Network in Waterloo Region was recognized with the Food Bank Innovator Award at the recent Food Banks Canada conference. Working together has meant access to more nutritious food and increased effectiveness in delivering the many services needed to help the most vulnerable in this community.
