At The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, our staff work tirelessly behind the scenes every day—securing and processing donations, organizing fundraising events and campaigns, sorting and storing food, and delivering orders to the 61 organizations in the Community Food Assistance Network. They also support our volunteers and collaborate with Network partners, all with one clear goal: to ensure no one in our community goes hungry.
One of our dedicated team members is Gabi Hudec, who joined The Food Bank in December 2024. As our food and fund drive administrative coordinator, Gabi plays a vital role in supporting community members and businesses as they organize food and fund drives to help neighbours in need.
“When someone registers a drive through our website, I receive their submission and follow up with all the information and guidance they may need to make their drive successful,” Gabi explains. “I provide ongoing support by arranging supplies, coordinating drop-offs and pick-ups, and ensuring that organizers have everything they need for their drive to run smoothly from start to finish.”

For Gabi, the most rewarding part of her job is witnessing the generosity and dedication of our community firsthand.
“Supporting people as they organize food and fund drives—and then seeing the donations that come in, knowing that they’ll directly help individuals and families in need—makes the work incredibly fulfilling,” she says. “It’s especially rewarding to help community members feel confident and excited about giving back and to see how their efforts can make a meaningful difference.”
While food and fund drives are encouraged year-round, the holiday season is typically the busiest. One recent drive organized by an elementary school was especially memorable for Gabi.
“They collected over 9,000 pounds of food, raised around $1,500, and helped provide nearly 11,000 meals for our community,” she shares. “In my time here at The Food Bank, I’ve never seen a school generate such an incredible level of support. It was truly inspiring to witness. It’s especially wonderful to see both kids and adults come together, working as a team to make a real difference in our community.”

Gabi wants anyone interested in running a food and fund drive to know that help is always available.
“Start simple and reach out for support,” she encourages. “You don’t need to have everything figured out from the start. My role here is to help guide you through the process, from planning to collection. Clear goals, good communication with participants, and a realistic timeline really go a long way. Most importantly, remember that every contribution matters and running a food and fund drive is a meaningful way to bring people together while also making a real impact in our community.”
She also emphasizes that organizing a food and fund drive can be simple.
“One easy, fun idea is to host a themed food and fund drive that ties directly to The Food Bank’s monthly most needed item,” she says. “This helps focus donations and it makes a big impact when it’s needed most.”
Above all, Gabi wants the community to know that every effort counts.
“Every food and fund drive—no matter the size—makes a difference.”
