Board member spotlight: Don Dychuck

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at The Food Bank of Waterloo Region—from supporting day-to-day operations to lending a hand at community events. But their impact doesn’t stop there. Volunteers also help lead the organization at the highest level, serving on The Food Bank’s Board of Directors

One of those dedicated volunteers is Don Dychuck, who joined the Board in November 2023. For Don, the decision to get involved was grounded in a deep belief in equity.

“I believe access to food is a basic right for everyone, and The Food Bank is one of the highest-impact organizations in our community that addresses this issue,” he says.

The Food Bank’s volunteer Board of Directors plays a critical role in guiding the organization’s mission and impact. Meeting throughout the year, Board members provide strategic oversight, governance, and financial stewardship, ensuring The Food Bank remains accountable and effective in its work to address food insecurity.

As treasurer, Don supports the development of a thoughtful, responsible budget, oversees cash flow and investments, and helps ensure strong internal controls and policies are in place. He also monitors potential risks and works with the Board to ensure the organization is prepared to respond.

“Together, these efforts enable donors to feel confident that when they give to The Food Bank, their donations are used wisely and efficiently,” he explains.

Since joining the Board, Don has gained a deeper understanding of the challenges many people face when seeking support.

“I have learned a lot about the stigma associated with seeking help and how big of a barrier it is,” he says. “Breaking down these barriers is an important action going forward.”

He has also seen firsthand the growing need for support. In 2024, there were 558,000 visits to local food hamper programs. That number rose to nearly 622,000 visits the following year.

“I am saddened by the increasing food insecurity and homelessness I see in our community,” Don shares. “For people without the two basic needs of food and safe shelter, there is often no clear path out of very difficult circumstances. I strongly believe that those affected deserve support from those of us who are fortunate enough to be able to help. Supporting the most vulnerable people in our community is a responsibility that we share as a civil society. By ensuring access to these two basic needs, we give everyone a fair chance at living happy, productive, and hopeful lives.”

Despite the challenges, Don remains optimistic.

“We are very lucky in Waterloo region,” he says. “The community continues to give generously to The Food Bank, and I feel positive that this will continue.”

For Don, serving on the Board has been both meaningful and fulfilling.

“It is an honour to serve our community by volunteering on the Board,” he says. “It allows me to apply my professional skills and experience to the critical issue of food insecurity. It’s personally very rewarding to be able to give back to our community in this manner.”
