Since 1970, Conestogo Electric Inc. has been a highly recognized and respected business in our community. They are not only known for providing exceptional and professional electrical design, installation and maintenance services but also for their commitment to Waterloo Region.
Giving back to the community is a fundamental part of their vision to create a brighter future and each year the staff and owners donate their time, talent and sponsorship to a variety of organizations and events. This year with the cancellation of many events and volunteer opportunities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they needed to look for new ways to make a difference.
Before masks were mandatory in Waterloo Region, the leadership team at Conestogo Electric Inc., decided a positive way to motivate employees to wear masks during their workday, was to make a contribution to The Food Bank in their name.
In this business profiles, we chat with Kyle Brohman, Director of Health & Safety at Conestogo Electric Inc., to find out more about how they encouraged staff to wear masks (in even the most challenging environments) and why giving back to the community is such an important part of their business.
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region (The Food Bank): Tell us a little bit about Conestogo Electric Inc.?
Conestogo Electric Inc.: We have been operating in Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding area for 50 years – since 1970 – providing electrical service and repair to residential, commercial, industrial and emergency services.
The Food Bank: Why is it important, as a business, to give back to the community?
Conestogo Electric Inc.: We want to show our pride in this community and the fact we have managed to be here for so long, whether through business or social connections. We feel it is important to be part of something bigger than just us and that’s why we are actively part of the community.
The Food Bank: What does it mean to your business to be able to give back so generously to the charitable and non-profit organizations in Waterloo Region?
Conestogo Electric Inc.: Pride. Pride in the sense that we are people that say we are going to do something, and we do it.
The Food Bank: How does Conestogo Electric Inc., support The Food Bank?
Conestogo Electric Inc.: We have supported The Food Bank over the years but when COVID-19 hit our community, we were looking for a positive way to motivate people while still giving back. That is when we said to the employees, if you wear a mask throughout your workday, we will make a donation in your name to The Food Bank. People in the building trades often pride themselves on being tough and this was one of those moments where if you say you’re tough, prove it and they did. Many of the working conditions can be a challenge but almost everyone contributed or participated. In fact, we raised 3,000 meals in support of The Food Bank.
The Food Bank: Why does Conestogo Electric Inc. support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region?
Conestogo Electric Inc.: We chose The Food Bank because it is a worthy cause. Part of owning and operating a business is to provide for others. While we provide for our team and family here, we also have the capacity to assist those in our community. And that’s what this initiative was about, helping people. One of the things with The Food Bank is they’re not just helping the destitute, they’re helping people who are working hard or may have had their employment taken away from them and need a little extra support or assistance. In the future we would like to be boots on the ground at the facility, when there are safe and practical ways to so. This won’t be the last time you hear from us.
