Canstruction Waterloo Region raises 117,543 meals for those facing hunger

Brock Solutions’ Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Giving wins the People’s Choice Award!

Waterloo Region, Ont., March 17, 2025Canstruction Waterloo Region, presented by Cohen Highley Lawyers, has raised an incredible 117,543 meals for individuals and families who are struggling to afford food.

This yearly event, held at Conestoga Mall during March Break, raises food and money in support of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region and highlights the serious issue of food insecurity in the community. This year, the event collected 34,680 pounds of food and raised $44,322 through donations from both the community and businesses. That’s the same as 117,543 meals. Since 2008, Canstruction Waterloo Region, affiliated with Canstruction, has raised more than 1.9 million meals.

“Every year, during Canstruction, I’m inspired by the incredible creativity and generosity on display. I can’t thank our community enough for helping us ensure that no one in Waterloo region goes hungry,” says Kim Wilhelm, CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

Canstruction Waterloo Region winners

This year, 15 teams from local businesses and community groups used their creativity to build awe-inspiring structures from 35,000 unopened food cans. On March 8, three structures were awarded red ribbons in the following categories:

  • Best Original Design: Demant (Hear the Sounds of Giving)
  • Structural Ingenuity: Stubbe’s Precast (With Open Hearts we CAN!)
  • Best Use of Labels: Brock Solutions (Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Giving)
  • Most Cans: Stubbe’s Precast (With Open Hearts we CAN!)
  • Best Meal: Brock Solutions (Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Giving)
  • Judges’ Favourite: Brock Solutions (Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Giving)

Between March 8 and 16, community members voted for their favourite build by making a financial donation to The Food Bank. The coveted People’s Choice Award went to Brock Solutions for Follow The Yellow Brick Road to Giving. This build raised 7,299 meals through the donate to vote option. Other fan favourites included Van Harten Surveying Inc.’s Closing the Book on Hunger with 6,831 meals, and Conestoga College ACET’s Gnome-more Hunger with 5,377 meals.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s Canstruction event successful! From the sponsors, build teams, and judges to our staff, volunteers, and generous community, your support truly makes a difference for our neighbours in need,” says Wilhelm.

The food used in the structures is donated to The Food Bank and then distributed to the 54 organizations in the Community Food Assistance Network that provide direct food support to the more than 73,600 people in Waterloo region accessing food assistance. The funds raised will help The Food Bank fill inventory gaps, buy food to meet diverse cultural and dietary needs, and maintain delivery operations.

Last year, The Food Bank distributed more than 8.9 million pounds of non-perishable, fresh, and frozen food to the Network.
