Agency Spotlight: Traverse Independence

Traverse Independence is an organization in Kitchener dedicated to helping adults with acquired brain injuries and physical disabilities achieve greater independence and self-sufficiency. Through a wide range of programs—including supportive housing, attendant care, and therapeutic services—the organization focuses on maximizing each person’s abilities and empowering them to live as independently as possible.

With food support from The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, Traverse Independence also addresses another critical need: food security. Once a week, clients in need can access the organization’s hamper program, which operates Monday through Friday.

“We have an onsite pantry available for clients to select the food items they need,” explains Brittany Stroeder, the service coordinator of the day program. “This includes cereal, rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, premade meals prepared by our cook, soups and sauces, pasta, and much more.”

Traverse Independence also runs a weekday meal program from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., serving about 45 meals each day.

“We’re fortunate to have a talented cook who prepares a variety of homemade meals each day,” Brittany says. “Each meal typically includes a protein, a vegetable, and a starch. Our cook enjoys creating all types of different dishes, bringing variety and flavour to every meal!”

These programs do more than relieve hunger—they enhance quality of life.

“For many individuals, accessing our hamper and meal programs makes a significant difference in their well-being,” Brittany shares. “In some cases, the meal they enjoy at our program is the only home-cooked meal they receive, which makes the experience truly special and meaningful. We absolutely love serving each and every one of our clients.”

For Brittany, it’s fulfilling to see the direct impact these food assistance programs have.

“The most rewarding part of running our hamper and meal programs is knowing that we are helping relieve food insecurity and seeing the gratitude and relief on our clients’ faces,” she says.
