As we reflect on the passing year, it’s impossible to overlook the profound challenges that have shaped our communities and touched the lives of many. Lack of affordable housing, increased interest rates, and the rising cost of food and gas prices has meant more people are turning to food banks than ever before. 1 in 9 households in our region are accessing a food assistance program.
It was during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic that Lance Bennett, a local investment advisor with Bennett Wealth Management of RBC Dominion Securities, felt the pull to do more. Already a member of EAT365, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region’s monthly donor community, he decided to become a community leader and encourage others to help neighbours in need. Lance has become a true champion of The Food Bank. Lance steps forward time and time again to help ensure no one in Waterloo region goes hungry. This past year he sponsored our Empty Bowls event in the spring and is joining with us once again as a matching donor.
“For me, I was seeing the direct impact and putting a face to the need,” says Lance. “I knew people needed help and I decided to increase my investment and support of The Food Bank to make a tangible difference and impact within the community.”
As new challenges affect the daily lives of members of our community, Lance recognizes that many families, people, and businesses will continue to face unprecedented challenges. During the last two weeks of December, Bennett Wealth Management of RBC Dominion Securities will generously be matching gifts up to $15,000.
When asked why he continues to support The Food Bank, Lance’s answer is simple. “I see the need in our community, and I help because I can, and it is the right thing to do. Gratitude and giving back are important. If you have the capacity to give back but don’t, then I don’t believe you are being all you can be. There is more to life than your own whims. Wealth isn’t what you make, it’s what you make of it.”
