Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at The Food Bank of Waterloo Region—from supporting day-to-day operations to lending a hand at community events. But their impact doesn’t stop there. Volunteers also help lead the organization at the highest level, serving on The Food Bank’s Board of Directors.
One of those dedicated volunteers is David Brenneman, who joined the Board in 2018.
“After nine years on the Board of the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation, and four years as chair there, I was looking for another great opportunity to serve on a Board to do more community building work that would really make a difference,” David recalls. “Joining The Food Bank felt like a really good fit. It’s a chance to contribute to meaningful work that changes lives—one person and one family at a time—so that no one goes hungry.”
The Food Bank’s volunteer Board of Directors plays a critical role in guiding the organization’s mission and impact. Meeting throughout the year, Board members provide strategic oversight, governance, and financial stewardship, ensuring The Food Bank remains accountable and effective in its work to address food insecurity. David currently serves as chair of the Board.
“With The Food Bank being a not-for-profit, it’s important to have a strong Board that provides good governance oversight and strong strategic direction,” David explains. “That oversight supports our relationship with the CEO, enabling her and the leadership team to effectively guide the overall operations of The Food Bank.”
Over his time on the Board, David is especially proud of the development and completion of our 2024–2027 Strategic Plan.
“It’s a foundational document for the work of the Board and the broader organization,” he says.

When David first joined the Board in 2018, about 34,000 people in Waterloo region were accessing food assistance. Today, that number has grown to nearly 73,000. Despite this significant increase in food insecurity, David remains optimistic about the future.
“The hope lies in our generous and caring community donors,” he says. “Our CEO and staff team are primed and ready to meet the needs of the community going forward. And right now, we have one of the best Boards I have ever had the pleasure of serving on.”
For David, serving on the Board is deeply meaningful.
“It’s a true privilege to make time to give back to community members that need our support at a critical time in their lives,” he shares.
For those thinking about volunteering in a similar capacity, David offers simple advice: step forward.
“Step outside your comfort zone,” he says. “Put your name forward so you can pay it forward. The reward will be found in giving your time, talent, and treasure to make a real difference in the community you live in.”
