The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region (SASC) is a feminist, non-profit organization that supports survivors of sexual violence of all genders across Waterloo region. Through a wide range of services and programs, including a 24-hour support line, counselling and support groups, legal support, public education and prevention programs, and specialized supports for individuals experiencing sexual exploitation and human trafficking, SASC helps people access safety, healing, and hope.
Creating space for healing
With support from The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, SASC also provides food assistance to individuals accessing specialized housing support through its anti-human trafficking program. This branch of the program helps women and gender-diverse people experiencing gender-based violence and safety concerns access safe accommodations while navigating the housing system. Each week, about six hampers filled with non-perishable food and bread are distributed through the program. By helping meet immediate food needs, the program provides greater stability during a difficult time, allowing individuals to focus on healing, securing safe housing, and working toward their goals.

“When food insecurity is no longer a barrier for someone to move forward with their goals, we have the opportunity to support them in actually achieving those goals,” says Georgia Tooke, counsellor advocate, specialized housing, anti-human trafficking program. “Many clients in our anti-human trafficking program have had to rely on unsafe individuals or experience exploitation to access food and accommodations. Providing food hampers empowers our clients and gives them the space to consider their futures and work toward healing, while helping to break cycles of violence and revictimization.”
Meeting everyday needs
In addition to food hampers, SASC operates a Practical Assistance Closet, where all clients in need can access non-perishable food, snacks, hygiene products, makeup, and clothing. Available during business hours with support from administrative staff, the closet provides access to everyday essentials that can otherwise be difficult to afford. Popular food items include snacks, cereal, drinks, peanut butter, canned fruit, and pasta. Through the Practical Assistance Closet, SASC supports more than 50 people each month.

“Food is a human right, and individuals should never be exploited to have this need met,” shares Nicky Carswell, manager, counselling and advocacy. “My hope is that the folks receiving this support experience less stress around finding food, reduced vulnerability, increased empowerment, improved health, and greater success in achieving their goals.”
